Jumping For Juniors
On 4th November, Cecilia Holden and Laura Collin from John O'Gaunt will be doing a sponsored bungee jump for the County Juniors.  They will be jumping at Liquid Leisure in Datchet, which at 300ft is the highest jump in the UK!  Please support these two nutcases by giving your donations to your county rep.

Milbrook pair Battle to Mail on Sunday Finals
Nikki Jackson & Sandra Gardner will represent The Millbrook and Bedfordshire in the Daily Mail Foursomes finals at the Forest of Arden on 21st-23rd October. The Daily Mail Foursomes is now one of the great amateur golf tournaments of the world. More than 190,000 players start in their club qualifying rounds before 3,000 plus teams start the seven rounds to reach the Finals. Lucky for Nikki and Sandra, after 6 tough rounds, they were given a home draw in round 7 and triumphed over Mentmore 4&3. A fantastic achievement for their first attempt at this competition. Trish honoured at FunD Day
At her FunD- Day, County Captain Jocelyn Faris made a presentation to Trish Grant in recognition of her service to the County.
Trish started out in the 2nd team back in 1980, when she received her colours. She made her 1st team debut in 1983 at Hunstanton and has played in 132 first team matches since then, right up to 2007 at Royal Norwich. Trish has played in 24 County Championships. In 12 of them she reached the semi final, she was beaten in one final, but won three titles in total: 1989, 1994 and 2001. Well done Trish! Will anyone match this record?

Seniors 2000 - Final
Dorothy Blackburn from Aspley Guise beat Di Spinks from Pavenham Park in an exciting final, held at Leighton Buzzard. Congratulations to both players.

Holly named as reserve for Home Internationals
The Bedfordshire's Holly Aitchison was named this week as reserve for the Home Internationals. The 8-strong England team comprises many familiar names. Click here for details

Jan Garnham wins Autumn Bronze for 2nd Year running.
Jan Garnham from Beds & County matched her performance last year by taking the Autumn Bronze gross prize. Lucinda Holden made it a Beds & County double, scooping the nett prize and the Coronation Medal. Congratulations.

Katie Wins Midland Girls
Katie Burman  from John O'Gaunt won the Midland Girls Championship at Park Hill Golf Club, Leicestershire. Katie's scores were 4 over par and 3 under, giving her an aggregate score 4 clear of the field, and cutting her handicap to 3. CONGRATULATIONS!!
Katie and team mates Megan Birdsey from Caddington and Lizzie Sweetnam from Leighton Buzzard took the team trophy. Well Done!

South Beds host regional LGU Coronation Foursomes finals
On Tuesday 14th August, South Beds Golf Club played host to the regional finals of the LGU Coronation Foursomes. Ladies Captain, Jean Hoar, and Vice Captain and Midlands Delegate, Kitty Nulty, had their work cut out with 200 ladies from all over the region descending on their club amid severe weather warnings. Despite the rain, a very successful day was had by all.  No rest for County President, Cicely Goldsmith, as she rushed back from Cromer to make the presentations. Click here for photos of the day

Holly Wins Junior Ladies' Open at St. Andrews
Bedfordshire's Holly Aitchison added another trophy to her already bulging cabinet when she won the Junior Ladies' Open at St. Andrews on Friday 10th August. Click her for details

2nd Team Triumph
The Bedfordshire 2nd team won the Norfolk Bowl on 13th August, at Royal Cromer Golf Club. It was a wonderful day's golf, played in sparkling weather conditions with all four counties competing. Although Bedfordshire narrowly lost to Suffolk, we won overall beating Norfolk by one match. Congratulations to all those who played over the last two months in the county matches. 2 out of 2 for the 2nds!
Bedfordshire's 2nd team overcame tricky approaches and greens to win against Norfolk at Swaffham G.C.on 6th August. The result was 7 1/2/ to 4 1/2 matches. All to play for now with our final match against Suffolk at Royal Cromer next Monday. Watch this space!!

County 2nd Team off to a winning start
Bedfordshire's 2nd team began the season with an emphatic 8-4 win over rivals Cambs & Hunts at Leighton Buzzard on 26th July. Conditions were atrocious but the team battled through, taking the morning foursomes 3 1/2 to 1/2 and then winning the afternoon singles 4 1/2 to 3 1/2.
Well played team!


Top Ten finishes for Bedfordshire pair at English Ladies Strokeplay
73 of the country's top amateur golfers teed it up in Silloth-on-Solway for the English Ladies' Close Amateur Stroke Play Championship including our own Holly Aitchison and Laura Collin. Conditions were horrific and scoring was tough, but both girls made the cut after 2 rounds. The final day consisted of 36 holes in torrential "horizontal" rain, but both girls battled valiantly to finish in the top 10. Laura finished 5th and Holly 9th. Well played both!!

Holly Makes it Through British Open Pre-Qualifying
Bedfordshire boasted 2 entrants for the Ricoh British Open pre-qualifying: Holly Aitchison from The Bedfordshire and Laura Collin from John O'Gaunt. Both girls had the requisite scratch handicap for entry, and teed it up along side other amateurs and professionals at The Berkshires on 19th July. Holly played extremely well and bagged one of the 25 final qualifying slots. Final qualifying takes place on the New course at St. Andrews on 30th July. GOOD LUCK HOLLY!

County Junior Championships 2007
The Junior Championship was held on Sunday 1st July at Aspley Guise and Woburn Sand GC. 17 girls took part handicaps ranged from 5 to 36.  Conditions were very blustery but for most part the rain held off.  Several girls were playing in the championship for the first time.  Kimberley Jones from Leighton Buzzard won the best nett with nett 74; Megan Birdsey from Caddington was 2nd with nett 77 and Molly Thorne from The Bedfordshire was 3rd with nett 79. Competition standard scratch was 74.  The County Junior Champion for 2007 is Katie Burman from John O’Gaunt with a gross 75, 8 shots better than the next best score. A fantastic result.  Katie is a member of Midland Select training squad.  The prizes were presented by County President, Cicely Goldsmith. The prize for county champion was donated by county ladies 1st team and Bedfordshire official who were at county week.  Many thanks to them.  Thanks also to Jos for the woolly hats and caps to go with the nett prizes.

A big thank you must go  lady captain Heddwyn Molloy of Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands for all her help with this event - her and her team of ladies were outstanding, checking the girls in, acting as ball spotters and manning the half way house. Thanks also to Heddwyn for providing homemade cakes and also for all the work done before the day. 

Katie now goes through to the Midland Division Champion of Champions at Greetham Valley on 16th September.

Holly Aitchison makes cut in Tour event
Bedfordshire amateur Holly Aitchison made an impressive debut alongside the professionals in the Ladies Open of Portugal at Gramacho, on the Algarve.  The 20-year-old Portuguese amateur champion from Bedfordshire Golf Club made the cut with a shot to spare.  Holly was four over par after two rounds, having scored 73, 75. She added a final round 77 to finish in a share of 58th place. She had been given a wildcard into the event by the Portuguese Golf Federation in recognition of her achievement in winning their national championship.  The Lades European Tour event was won by Sophie Giquel of France on 10 under par. Kirsty Taylor (Minchinhampton) led the way for England in sixth place on two under, followed by Yorkshire’s Rebecca Hudson, who shared 12th spot on two over.

Bedfordshire duo compete at British Amateur Championships
Laura Collin from John O'Gaunt and Holly Aitchison from The Bedfordshire flew the county flag at Allwoodley Golf Club in Leeds in June at the British Ladies Championships. In the event's strongest ever field, with a cut off of 0.9 handicap, both girls played extremely well in attrocious conditions. Holly just missed the cut, but Laura qualified for the knockout stages in 24th place. She beat French international Emelie Alonso in the last 64, but missed out against Dutch international and American collegiate champion, Dewi Claire Schreefel in the last 32. Well done - a great performance!

Holly Aitchison from The Bedfordshire bt Laura Collin from John O'Gaunt 2&1 in a thrilling final at Dunstable Downs. Both players played exceptional golf in very wet and windy weather. Trish Grant of Dunstable Downs & Bridie Quinn of South Beds were the losing semi-finalists.

Bedfordshire Successes at English Seniors

In the B Division (6.5 and above handicap ) of the English Seniors Championship played at Delamere Forest Elaine James (Aspley Guise) was leading qualifier and Shelagh Cormack (Bedford and County) 2nd qualifier. Both reduced their handicap in the 36 hole qualifying for the matchplay stage and went onto win their first round games but unfortunately lost in the 1/4 finals.
